Just like the three key words for real estate are “location, location, location,” the three key words for St. Joseph County should be “jobs, jobs, jobs.” As a small business owner for more than 20 years, I am keenly focused on encouraging economic growth that produces good-paying jobs for our county’s residents. When I learned that our county hasn’t grown in population for nearly 30 years, I realized we needed to refocus our efforts to promote economic development. That is why one of the first things I did when I was caucused in as one of your St. Joseph County Commissioners in December 2014, was to propose our county double-down on its efforts to bring jobs to the area. I recommended hiring a county economic development director – something we had never had – to bring to this cause the focus and economic expertise our county deserves. While this isn’t a silver bullet, it’s a step in the right direction, and I’m excited that we’re already seeing results. For example, as a result of this renewed emphasis on economic development, our county director helped get the approval for a new natural gas energy plant in the New Carlisle area. Economic evaluations of this project estimate that it could bring in nearly $30 million to our county over the next 25 years and – more importantly – has the potential to bring dozens of quality, high-paying jobs. In addition to this project, I am also looking forward to proceeding with plans to encourage economic development in the Capital Avenue area in Mishawaka as well as plans to promote new hiking and tourism trails in Lakeville. I am confident that this renewed focus on economic development will bring quality jobs in impressive numbers to our county. If you re-elect me as your County Commissioner, I assure you I will maintain our county’s focus on this worthy goal.
