Mishawaka, IN. – Today, County Commissioner Dr. Deb Fleming, surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, filed her candidacy paperwork and officially announced her intention to seek election to the County Board of Commissioners, Third District.
In her remarks to gathered supporters, Fleming stressed her passion to make the county work more efficiently and with unmatched transparency. She emphasized that her 25 years of experience as a business owner and the fact that she is a political outsider make her the best candidate to move Saint Joseph County forward.
“I am not running out of some conceited desire to become a permanent part of the political class or to raise my personal status. I am running for this seat because I truly believe that I can make a difference,” Fleming said. “As an outsider, serving on the Board of Commissioners this past year has been an eye-opening experience. I know we can do better. Don’t get me wrong, there are things that we do well as a county but there are more areas in which we must improve if we want to attract businesses, grow our tax base and provide better service to Saint Joseph County residents. We have a habit of getting mired in layer upon layer of bureaucracy that discourages innovation and creative problem solving.”
Concluding her remarks, Fleming said, “If I am elected, I will work tirelessly to make county government work for the people, being open and transparent with them every step of the way. I will look for every opportunity to get government out of the way of the innovators, the entrepreneurs and the visionaries, unleashing the power and potential of Saint Joseph County’s best and brightest. Together, we can once again make Saint Joseph County the envy of the Midwest.”
Dr. Deb Fleming was elected in a caucus in November of 2014 to finish the term of County Commissioner Marsha McClure. Fleming is as native of Mishawaka, dentist and owner of Princess City Dental. She is a current member of the Indiana Dental Association Council on Government affairs, active in the Junior League of South Bend as well as her church. Dr. Fleming and her husband, Bob Schell have raised four children together in Saint Joseph County.
Commissioner District 3 covers the City of Mishawaka, most of Penn Township and many Eastern precincts in South Bend.
